Now look through your book and think of answers to these questions:

What do you notice about this book that is different from the novels we have read before?

Read the blurb on the back.
Look at the dedication and quote.
  • Who is Julia?  How does the quote relate to the novel?
Let’s look at the illustrations in the book.
  • Who was the illustrator of the book?
  • What do you see?
  • Are there any in particular that stand out to you?
Notice the glossary is at the beginning of the book.
  • Where is the glossary usually located?
  • Why do you think the author chose to place it here?
  • Do you think the author wanted to bring attention to those words?
  • How many of you sometimes don’t even look at the words in the glossary?
  • What was the author’s motive in placing the glossary before the text?
